What is the purpose of the Air Suspension Helper Kits?
Air suspension helper kits are designed to help level out and take stress off the rear suspension by lifting it using compressed air. If you are towing a caravan or going away to Fraser for the weekend and have loaded the rear of your car up, this is the perfect short term solution to help level out the rear of your vehicle.
What are the different types of bags?
Starting with the obvious, there are 2 different bag designs for Coil springs and Leaf Springs. Coil Springs have the airbag sit inside the spring like in the 2 images shown above. When air is pumped into them, it stiffens the spring to help it stay firm for when you load the rear up. The other is for Leaf Springs where the bump stop on leaf sprung vehicles are replaced with the air bags. When pumped up, they too also stiffen up the rear by reducing how much movement the spring has under load.
After that, you then have standard bags and High Pressure bags, the difference being that one has a higher PSI rating than the other. Although the high pressure bags are more expensive, I usually recommend them over the others for that higher PSI rating.
Do's and Don'ts
First off, when the airbags are not in use, they need to have at least a minimum of 5PSI in the bag to prevent any binding or damage. This is usually also stated in the manual as well and can also void warranty if not adhered to.
If you have a constant load in the rear such as drawers, canopy or battery, a suspension upgrade would be recommended instead. Airbags are only for temporary heavy loads such as towing, quick camp trips or even a trip to the tip. If you are unsure, give us a call and we can help choose the right kit for you!
Don’t overinflate the bags as this can cause tears and damage to the bags.
Always read the instructions and user manual as plenty of information can be found there for your specific bags.
